Tubabu, a percussion ensemble based in Des Moines, Iowa, performs traditional rhythms and songs from Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast.
Together since 2003, the group apprenticed under master drummer Madou Dembele (Mali/Ivory Coast) from 2000 to 2005, performing with Madou throughout Iowa and northern Missouri under the name Super Yankadi. In 2003, members of the group spent a month in the Ivory Coast, performing with Madou’s older brother Dramane Dembele's drum troupe at wedding festivals.
Tubabu performs at music venues, festivals, and special events. The group offers educational assembles in schools and libraries for children of all ages.
Past performance venues include: Des Moines -- Ritual Cafe, Vaudeville Mews, Java Joe's, World Food Festival, World Food Prize, Des Moines Art Festival, Natural Living Expo, and Grand View College. Ames -- Iowa Special Olympics, Odyssey of the Mind, Roosevelt Summer Sundays, Ames Progressive, Worldly Goods, and Cafe Diem. Fairfield -- Sondheim Center, MIU, Morning Star Studio, Cafe Paradiso, and Abundance Ecovillage. The group has also been a mainstay performer at the yearly Des Moines Marathon, playing near the beginning of the race and also in the homestretch every year since 2003.
